Electronic ballasts maximise convenience and cost-savings

Fairchild Semiconductor has introduced the FAN7710 and FAN7711, two highlyintegrated electronic ballast ICs that save cost and footprint while supporting advanced lamp-control features. |
Both devices integrate frequency-control and
shunt-regulator circuits as well as a high-side 625V
gate driver. The FAN7710 also implements two
550V MOSFETs to deliver a system-in-package
solution for Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL)
applications. The FAN7711 is designed for use with
external MOSFETs, giving engineers the flexibility
to optimise for Linear Fluorescent Lamp (LFL)
applications.
By presenting only two pins for frequency
control and time control, compared to the
four pins required by conventional devices,
the FAN7710 and FAN7711 simplify system
design. The FAN7710 is available in the 8-pin
Dual Inline Package (DIP-8), while the FAN7711
is available as 8-pin DIP or in the 8-pin Small
Outline Package (SOP-8).
Further features include Active Zero Voltage
Switching (AZVS), which allows detection of an
open-lamp condition without requiring external
circuitry. AZVS also increases system stability and
reduces stress on MOSFETs. Additional integrated
features that enhance performance and reliability
include common-mode-noise cancellation to
minimise dV/dt-noise intrusion, as well as Undervoltage
Lockout (UVLO) and an output buffer for
shoot-through prevention.
