Transceiver heralds low-cost optical networking

The SPFEIM100-G from Avago Technologies is an optical transceiver for use with Plastic Optical Fibre (POF), optimised for easy cabling and direct connection to standard Fast Ethernet switch ICs.

The new transceiver serves cost-sensitive applications requiring a high-quality transport solution for streaming applications such as videoover- IP. The transceiver supports easy cut-andplug installation of the fibre, with no connector required. The mating is also mechanically strong, with high pull-out force when locked.

Internal peaking and clamping circuitry optimises the eye opening to maximise signal integrity, resulting in a power budget of 11dB for link lengths up to 50m and a maximum data rate of 125Mbit/s.

Where 100Mbit/s Fast Ethernet connectivity is required but installation of standard Ethernet cable is a challenge, the SPFEIM100-G allows the use of dual-core POF with a cross-sectional area six-times smaller than Cat5 Ethernet cable.

System integrators can also overcome the limitations of shared-media interconnects such as wireless or powerline networking, achieving a low-cost optical solution that delivers the highest quality of service.
