PFC controllers minimise system impact
|
|
ON Semiconductor has introduced two PFC controllers that operate in fixedfrequency, continuous-conduction mode to minimise interference, with extra features to reduce footprint and power consumption. |
The NCP1653 and NCP1654 are designed for use
with boost converters. Fixed-frequency operation
eases compliance with EMC standards, while
continuous-conduction mode also reduces
interference by ensuring low dI/dt.
All the features required to build a compact and
rugged PFC stage are provided, including internal
soft-start, over-voltage protection, coil-current
limitation, thermal shutdown, brown-out
detection, and a ±1.5A gate driver for efficient
switching of TO-220 or TO-247 power MOSFETs.
Both devices are optimised for minimum power
consumption in all operating modes, including
reduced power at start-up and shutdown to meet
stringent specifications for equipment stand-by
power.
Compact DIP-8 or SO-8 packages, minimum
external components, and integrated protection
features enable a space-efficient solution.
The NCP1653 is also able to operate in followerboost
mode, allowing a smaller external inductor
and power switch. Other on-chip safety features,
including input-power-runaway clamping, inrush
current detection and true over-power protection,
enable additional savings in cost and footprint.
