Regulator adjusts for all load conditions

Micrel has launched the MIC2238 switched-mode regulator, featuring high output current, low-current operation, flexible power-saving modes and a small footprint for optimal performance in portable, battery-powered products.

Two output channels, each rated up to 800mA, provide the capability to drive demanding portable applications. There is also a power-good output with internal 5µA current source, which allows voltage sequencing with programmable delay time to enhance system-level integration.

In addition, the MIC2238 introduces several features to maximise efficiency and minimise footprint. Selectable operating modes include variable-frequency Trickle Mode™ operation for ultrahigh efficiency at light loads, with over-rideable automatic switching to PWM operation at full load to minimise outputvoltage ripple. The quiescent current of 28µA in light-load conditions prolongs battery life when equipment is in shutdown mode. The device also supports optional constantfrequency operation, and is optimised for use with a 2.2µH external inductor and 2.2µF ceramic capacitor to save overall footprint. The thermally-enhanced 3mm × 3mm MLF package enables a compact solution and eases thermal management.
