8-bit family integrated features improves capabilities of low-cost designs



 


Freescale’s S08D family of 8-bit MCUs integrates a Controller Area Network (CAN) interface, EEPROM and on-chip emulation/debug tools.

By integrating essential connectivity and memory capabilities within a single-chip architecture, Freescale’s next-generation S08D family enables enhanced system performance while reducing board space, power consumption, development time and system cost.

The embedded CAN interface provides an ideal connectivity solution for many automotive and industrial control applications. Embedded EEPROM enhances design flexibility by allowing unlimited data read/write updates and eliminating the need for an external serial EEPROM. Integrated development tools with on-chip debug enable designers to debug quickly in real-time resulting in faster time to market.

Manufactured on Freescale’s 0.25-micron process technology and providing 40MHz core speed and 20MHz bus speed, the S08D family is designed to deliver high performance within a low power envelope.

By keeping power consumption low, the S08D family therefore allows increased electronics content within existing automotive or industrial applications that are supplied via 12V batteries.

The S08D family is supported by a comprehensive set of software development tools, such as CodeWarrior Development Studio, Background Debug Mode (BDM), Multilink and Cyclone Pro, as well as hardware development tools, including evaluation boards, demonstration boards and programming adaptors. In addition to these tools, Freescale has made available source code for many of the low-level software drivers for CAN and LIN communication.
