Single-chip solution for non-contact angular position sensing
The MLX90316 from Melexis allows
engineers to eliminate multiple Hall
sensors in favour of a single surfacemount
sensor IC for absolute angular
position sensing through 360°.
Using technology owned by Melexis, the
MLX90316 is able to sense magnetic
flux in both x and y directions,
coplanar with the IC surface. This
allows the angular displacement
of a diametrically-magnetised
magnet positioned
close to the IC
surface to be
accurately
calculated by
applying digital
signal processing to
the induced sine and
cosine signals.
The MLX90316 can output the computed
angle in any of three formats, including a
ratiometric analogue signal from the
integrated 14-bit D/A converter, a PWM signal
of programmable frequency, or a digital serial
signal of 16-bits resolution. The output
transfer characteristic is fully
programmable in each
mode, by adjusting the
offset in addition to
the gain, clamping
level, slope polarity
or PWM
frequency
depending on
the output
mode selected.
Programming
is performed using
the Melexis PTC-04
programming unit, via
the three-wire connector delivering
supply, ground and output. No dedicated
programming connections or clocksynchronisation
schemes are necessary.
