Configurable SoCs support turnkey touchscreen solutions
Cypress Semiconductor has extended
its PSoC® CapSense™ range to help
designers using rugged touch-sensor
technologies including projectedcapacitance
sensors that can be
embedded in toughened panels.
Conventional surface-capacitance sensors are
also supported, and a wide range of
applications and screen sizes can be achieved.
In addition to accelerating design completion,
the new PSoC CapSense touchscreen solution
allows designers to implement multiple additional
functions simultaneously, including capacitive
buttons and sliders as well as proximity sensing.
Engineers can also take advantage of the PSoC
mixed-signal array to implement system-level
functions such as backlight control, motor control,
power management, I/O expansion, and ambientlight
detection.
These functions, in conjunction
with industry-standard I2C and SPI
communications, allow a high level
of system integration.
The flexibility of the PSoC mixedsignal
array, supporting two touchsensing
technologies, enables
accurate touchscreen performance
for a wide range of screen sizes.
Projected-capacitance technology
can sense through thick overlays
and supports multi-touch detection
and gesturing, making it ideal for
small-form-factor screens. Surfacecapacitance
sensing, by contrast,
operates from the four corners of
the screen and therefore scales well
to larger screens without an attendant
increase in I/O.
