System-in-a-package approach to efficient resonant converters



 


The FSFR2100 integrated Green FPS™ power switch offered by Fairchild Semiconductor takes a system-in-apackage approach to building reliable and efficient resonant converters.

This power switch integrates a Pulse-Frequency- Modulation (PFM) controller with a high-voltage gate-driver circuit and two Fast Recovery MOSFETs (FRFET®) along with soft-start, burst operation and protection features into a thermally-efficient 9-SIP package. The combined integration of the FSFR2100 results in increased power efficiency, improved system reliability, and reduced design time for resonant converters.

The FSFR2100 features a Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) technique that dramatically reduces switching losses in MOSFETs and rectifiers. With this technique, this power switch can handle up to 200W without a heat sink and up to 450W with a heat sink. Compared to conventional hard-switch converter topologies, efficiency is improved by 10%, and for applications such as PDP-TVs, efficiency reaches 97%. An additional advantage of this ZVS technique is that switching noise is reduced. Offering burst operation function, the FSFR2100 brings standby power consumption below 1W to easily comply with the industry’s 1 Watt Initiative.
