10.5Gb/s transceiver incorporates digital diagnostics

The 850nm XFP transceiver module, from Avago Technologies, is designed for serial optical data communications covering signal rates of 9.9Gb/s to 10.5Gb/s.

The AFBR-720XPDZ is compliant with XFP MSA Rev 4.5 and offers digital diagnostics using the 2-wire serial interface specified by XFP MSA.

The digital diagnostic interface provides information on real-time temperature of the module and laser, supply voltage and received input power as well as the bias current and average output power of the laser. It also features hardwired pins with the ability to disable the transmitter, power-down the module, and monitor for module faults or loss of signal at the receiver.

The AFBR-720XPDZ module is designed for multi-mode fibre and operates at a nominal wavelength of 850nm. The transmitter section incorpo rates Avago Technologies’ 850nm Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL). The receiver section uses a specialised Avago Technologies’ photo detector for low dark current and improved responsiveness. Integrated Tx and Rx signal conditioners provide high jitter-tolerance for full XFI compliance, whilst the internally AC-coupled highspeed serial I/O simplifies interfacing to external circuitry. The electrical interface is made using an industry-standard 0.8mm pitch 30-pin right-angle connector, and optical connection is via the duplex LC connector.
