No power required to make high-speed signals go further
Two signal-equaliser ICs from
National Semiconductor compensate
for losses and jitter in high-speed
data lines but require no power or
ground connection, to deliver a
convenient, energy-saving solution.
The DS38EP100 and DS80EP100 effectively
extend signal range by compensating for jitter
induced by transmission over cables or PCB-backplane
tracks. They address signal-speed
ranges from 1Gbit/s to 5Gbit/s, and 5Gbit/s to
12Gbit/s respectively. The devices operate by
attenuating low-frequency signals and acting
as a bandpass filter at the resonant frequency.
Both equalisers are designed for linear and
symmetric response. Linearity ensures the same
compensation at the receiver circuit
regardless of the location of the device in
the data path. The symmetry of the
equalisation network ensures equal signal
compensation regardless of the direction
of data flow, thereby allowing
bidirectional operation. The space-saving
6-pin leadless LLP package of footprint
2.2mm x 2.5mm further enhances
flexibility in placement and routing.
In addition, the absence of power and
ground requirements not only simplifies
implementation but also allows easy
connection in series with an existing
active equaliser.
