Class-D chipset provides flexibility for inspired audio designers
Audio engineers new to designing
high-power switching circuitry for
50-500W Class-D amplifiers can now
choose a chipset solution without
compromising performance or design
flexibility.
The International Rectifier
IRS2092 Class-D controller
integrates the error amplifier,
PWM comparator, gate-driver
and overload-protection
functions to provide a proven
platform that audio
engineers can scale to meet
power and performance
requirements. When
combined with external
MOSFETs from IR’s large
range of devices optimised
for digital audio, the IRS2092
solves the toughest Class-D
design challenges while
leaving engineers free to
customise feedback and
output filter design for
enhanced performance and
differentiation.
The IRS2092 input stage features high noise
immunity and wide bandwidth, allowing
designers to achieve Total Harmonic Distortion
plus Noise as low as 0.005%. A proprietary
junction-isolation technique effectively
isolates switching noise from the analogue
audio input. In addition, the PWM comparator
has a short propagation delay, which helps
designers when optimising the feedback loop.
The gate driver stage includes dead-time
insertion, and is optimised for low pulse-width
distortion and close matching for maximum
linearity.
Designers can scale the amplifier to the
required output power rating through selection
of the external output transistors, and by
optimising the IRS2092’s internal protection
thresholds. Multi-channel designs, such as 5.1
or 7.1 surround sound, are also easily achieved.
