Connectors combine HDMI and eSATA for high-performance HD connectivity

Tyco Electronics has introduced two space-saving connectivity innovations for high-performance multimedia recording, storage and playback devices.

The first combines High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) and external SATA (eSATA) connectors in a single unit, delivering a compact solution for high-end PCs or similar devices that must manage Terabytes of multimedia data. eSATA allows communication with an external drive such as a storage disk at data rates up to 3Gbit/s, which is more than six times faster than current USB 2.0 or IEEE1394 standards. This saves time when transferring or backing-up large numbers of highdefinition video or graphics files.

eSATA interfaces are now being incorporated into professional and premium consumer multimedia products, and this new connector enables an enhanced solution maximising connectivity and speed.

The second connector introduced is a stacked HDMI module providing two connectors in a single assembly to save space in emerging designs requiring multiple ports. Examples are professional studio equipment as well as next-generation consumer products such as HD-TVs that must connect to several highdefinition sources simultaneously. These include high-end game consoles, PCs, camcorders, HD-DVD players and personal video recorders.
