Processor continuum extends low-power options

Freescale Semiconductor has extended its QE series of MCUs focused on energy efficiency, by adding the 8-bit MC9S08QE8 family.

The new MCUs are pin-compatible with the 32-bit Freescale QE devices, presenting a convenient upgrade path for low-power applications requiring increased processing capability.

Power-saving features of the MC9S08QE8 family include two low-current stop modes, reduced-power run and wait modes, 6µs wake-up time from stop mode, and clockgating registers that disable clocks to unused peripherals. The devices can operate with an internal oscillator or low-power external oscillator. Internal design features reduce operating voltage and current allow extended battery life and maintain performance.

In addition to low power consumption, integrated peripherals enable new opportunities for designers. Operation from 1.8V to 3.6V enhances battery-life in portable equipment, while integrated features include two 16-bit timers, a UART, SPI port and I2C port. Further on-chip functions include two analogue comparators and a 10-channel 12-bit ADC.
