Bluetooth® modules for easy serial-cable replacement

National Semiconductor has introduced two modules to aid design of Bluetooth® serial-port solutions, offering a choice of integrated features for optimal cost, footprint and power consumption. Both Simply Blue modules include a high-level command interpreter that removes the need for Bluetooth expertise.

The LMX9830 combines a Bluetooth baseband controller and highly-integrated CMOS radio transceiver into a single package measuring 6.1mm x 9.1mm x 1.2mm, pre-qualified as a Bluetooth integrated component. The second module, the LMX9838, implements a complete Bluetooth serial port, with dimensions of 10mm x 17mm x 2mm, by also including the crystal, antenna, LDO regulator and associated discrete components.

Both modules implement a complete Bluetooth v2.0 stack, including SPP profile and command interface. Supported features include point-to-point and point-to-multipoint link management capable of data rates up to 704kbit/s.

This is the theoretical maximum over the Bluetooth RFCOMM protocol, and represents a best-in-class achievement. The internal memory supports up to seven active Bluetooth data links and one active SCO link.
