Direct, non-contact temperature sensing saves HVAC energy
The Melexis MLX90614 comprises
infrared non-contact temperature
sensors for automotive as well as
industrial or domestic sensing
applications.
The devices measure temperature directly,
allowing systems such as vehicle climate controls
to operate more efficiently and reduce energy
consumption by up to 40%. In an automotive
application, for example, the sensor assures that
the compressor in the system can work at a
constant level without large changes in loading.
This results in higher efficiency of the climate-control
system, enabling lower fuel consumption.
This small and cost-effective non-contact
thermometer delivers a fully-calibrated, digital
temperature reading for a remote object. It
achieves this feature by integrating an infrared
sensor and a custom signal conditioning chip in
one TO-style package. This implementation
solves the traditional challenges surrounding
complexity and reliability that have historically
prevented the use of infrared sensing in
automotive applications.
The built-in intelligence, high accuracy
and wide operating-temperature range of
the MLX90614 allow OEMs to easily integrate
non-contact temperature measurement in
automotive air conditioning, as well as
applications such as room heaters, home
appliances, handheld devices and medical
equipment.
