PFC controller for electronic ballasts saves power, size and part count
As an efficient solution to providing
power-factor correction for electronic
ballasts and other switched-mode
converters, the ON Semiconductor
NCP1606 operates in Critical Conduction
Mode (CRM) with constant on-time to save
space and power consumption.
CRM with voltage-mode control allows the
NCP1606 to achieve high power factor without
requiring line-sensing components, which
otherwise increase part count and standby power
consumption. By implementing CRM, the
NCP1606 is also able to achieve unity power factor
across a wide range of input voltages and power
levels, to maximise performance in many
applications.
A totem-pole gate driver capable of
500mA/800mA sink/source current enables rapid
turn-on and turn-off for higher efficiency and the
ability to drive high-power MOSFETs.
