Efficient backlight inverters save up to 30 components

Two new inverter ICs from Fairchild Semiconductor eliminate up to 30 components in four-lamp CCFL backlights to save footprint and energy consumption.

The FAN7316 and FAN7317 achieve low cost and high integration by implementing a patented phase-shift control method using full-wave rectifiers for open-lamp protection and regulation. Wide operating voltages, from 4.5V to 24V in the FAN7316 and 6V to 25.5V in the FAN7317, eliminate the need for an external regulator to supply the IC.

In addition, multiple features and functions enhance performance, maximise flexibility for end users and speed time to market. These include Open Lamp Protection (OLP), Open Lamp Regulation (OLR), selectable dimming polarity and analogue or digital dimming control.

As well as saving space and cost, the lower part count of solutions built using the FAN7316 or FAN7317 delivers superior system reliability and also simplifies design for N-N half-bridge, push-pull, and P-N fullbridge inverters.
