Regulators extend battery life by up to six hours
Battery-powered devices can run for up
to six hours longer by using the AS1329
boost converter, from austriamicrosystems,
which is able to maintain an output
voltage between 2.5V to 5.0V even
when the battery voltage has decayed
as low as 0.65V.
The AS1329 is optimised for use as the main
DC/DC regulator in products operating from a
lithium battery or single AA cell, and enables
longer battery life by combining its low-input
capability with higher operating efficiency
compared to competing devices.
The closest alternative device requires a battery
voltage of at least 0.9V.
Three variants of the AS1329 are available,
providing a choice of power-saving schemes. The
AS1329A implements pulse-skipping for power
saving under medium- and light-load conditions,
while the AS1329B is optimised for ultra-low
power at light loads only. For applications where
predictable and straightforward filtering of output
noise is a priority, the AS1329C delivers the
advantages of high operating efficiency and low
input voltage with fixed-frequency operation at all
loads.
In addition to delivering power-saving
advantages, these devices also operate at 1.2MHz
switching frequency, which saves PCB space by
allowing small inductors and ceramic capacitors.
