Maximum mileage for mobile processors

The LP3971 power-management IC from National Semiconductor solves the power-supply requirements of mobile application processors by combining six linear regulators and three DC/DC magnetic buck regulators in one device that achieves ±3% output-voltage accuracy for all channels.

Building on technology from the National LP3970, the LP3971 targets mobile devices using Marvell, Freescale or Samsung processors. The three onchip buck regulators deliver high current to the CPU and I/Os, while the six LDOs are available for powering the real-time clock, processor peripherals and other I/O domains. The LP3971 also provides a backup-battery charger featuring an automatic switch for lithium-manganese coincell batteries and supercapacitors.

The LP3971 implements an I2C interface to enable software control of regulator functions and settings, allowing designers to apply Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS) to optimise performance and energy efficiency.
