USB OTG and touchscreen for 32-bit embedded designs
To empower a new generation of
embedded entry-level Human-Machine
Interface (HMI) systems in the industrial
world Freescale has launched the new
ColdFire® MCF5227x family based on the
established ColdFire V2 core running up
to 160MHz. The part integrates an LCD
controller capable of supporting graphical
LCD panels up to SVGA resolution.
A unique feature of this part is the ADC
supporting true touchscreen capability. A USB OTG
module on-chip also assures easy connection to
external input and output peripherals
without requiring a host PC. In addition,
there is an embedded CAN controller to
allow for connection to one of the industry’s
most popular networking protocols.
The combination of the LCD controller with
the ADC on-chip, supported with up to 128kbyte
of SRAM, delivers a unique solution for low- to
mid-range HMI systems. Through real hardware
support, the MCF5227x minimises the total
memory capacity required. In turn, this reduces
component count and system cost to enable an
optimal solution for graphical touchscreens in
embedded applications.
The touchscreen controller is implemented
using an 8-channel, 12-bit ADC, and supports
4-, 5-, 7-, or 8-wire resistive touch sensors.
Alternatively, the ADC can be used as a general-purpose
converter in a pure signal-conditioning
role. The accompanying LCD controller supports
single-screen monochrome and colour displays up
to 4096 x 4096 pixels resolution.
Initially the MCF5227x is being offered in a
196-pin BGA package with up to 55 General
Purpose I/O (GPIO).
Further peripherals enhance connectivity,
including a FlexCAN module, three UARTs, a DMA
SPI (DSPI), an I2C module and a Synchronous Serial
Interface (SSI) for audio-codec support.
For high-speed processing and
communications, there is an Enhanced Multiply-
Accumulate unit (EMAC) for DSP and fast-multiply
operations, as well as a hardware-divide
unit supporting various 32-bit
operations. There is also
a 16-channel DMA
controller and a
crossbar switch
enabling
concurrent
access to
peripherals or RAM
from multiple bus masters.
