Drivers extend PROFIBUS performance



 


Exar has a range of transceiver and UART devices for PROFIBUS applications, with features for fast data rates, long transmission distance, high signal integrity and enhanced power management. The range includes the SP1486E transceiver as well as the XR16V2x5x dual-UART portfolio containing nine devices.

The SP1486E has 1/8th-load capability, which allows up to 256 transceivers on the communication bus without violating the PROFIBUS specification. Key features include 2.1V minimum differential output voltage, which allows robust data transmission over longer distances than standard RS-485 transceivers, and 20Mbit/s data rate supporting data-intensive and real-time applications. In addition, Hot-swap capability saves shutting down the entire system when inserting or removing individual circuit boards. An advanced failsafe-protection feature minimises noise and parasitic coupling, and prevents input pins from drifting if left unassigned.

The XR16V2x5x dual-UART family comprises nine different devices, all sharing similar core features including automatic sleep mode, 5V-tolerant inputs, and operating voltages of 2.25V to 3.63V. All devices also have the fractional baud-rate generator that allows the designer to generate standard baud rates from any available clock source on the circuit board. This saves components and PCB area by eliminating the external crystal usually required solely for the UART. In addition, the XR16V2x51 devices offer the Power-save mode and selectable Intel/Motorola bus interface.
