Configurable interconnects support multi-gigabit VME-based design
To help designers evolve VME-bus
systems to take advantage of high-speed
serial switched-fabric interconnects such
as PCI Express and 10Gb Ethernet, Tyco
Electronics is offering the MultiGig RT
backplane interconnect family with
support for VITA 41 (VXS) and VITA 46
(VPX) specifications.
The MultiGig RT1 and RT2 families support
141 signals per inch at data
rates up to 3.125Gbit/s, and
113 signals per inch at data
rates greater than 6.4Gbit/s
respectively. MultiGig RT2
interconnects have actually
been demonstrated at up to 10Gbit/s.
Both families are also fully compatible with
MP-based fibre-optic-array interconnects.
The interconnect system comprises modular,
pinless connectors, which can be configured
using custom printed-circuit wafers to implement
signal and power connections meeting the
required signal sequencing or power rating.
Wafers can be manufactured specifically for
differential or single-ended signalling. The
impedance, propagation delay, and crosstalk of
the connector can be altered to meet application-specific
requirements.
The pinless design
eliminates the pin field on
backplane
boards. Further
features that
save PCB
complexity
include an
optimised footprint
for easier layout and
the use of 0.022-inch
diameter vias to save
fabrication costs.
