High-performance Flash heightens protection of digital content

Silicon Storage Technology’s 38 series Advanced Multi-Purpose Flash Plus (Advanced MPF+) memories combine fast boot-up and field-update performance with enhanced protection against unauthorised data tampering.

The 38 series comprises four devices, SST38VF6401/2/3/4, which provide four levels of hardware blocking for data protection. Each device has 64Mbits density and meets the JEDEC standard pin-out for x16 devices.

The memory-protection capabilities deliver benefits in consumer and network-attached equipment, such as set-top boxes for pay TV, where the integrity of services or data is important. Other memory-protection functions prevent inadvertent over-writing or erasing of data. These include boot-block protection as well as protection of individual blocks. An irreversible block-locking feature also provides the opportunity for permanent protection of memory blocks. Password protection is also provided.

With the 38 series, engineers can optimise read and write speeds to satisfy application requirements. Speed-up tools include pageread mode and a 16-word write buffer. Word-by-word programming is typically completed within 7µs, while the write buffer allows programming time to be further reduced to 1.75µs (typical) per word. For fast data access the page-read feature complements the single-word read mode, and reduces wordread time to 25ns for words on the same page.
