Enhanced UARTs hit 16Mbit/s in low-voltage designs
Exar Corporation has added new
quad-channel UARTs for low-voltage
designs, compatible with industry-standard
devices offering an eightfold
speed increase with data rates
up to 16Mbit/s.
The XR16M554/564/654 series is designed to
operate from 1.62V for direct use in
advanced low-voltage and low-power
boards. All the devices share a common set
of features including four independent UART
channels and selectable trigger levels for
transmit and receive modes. In addition, the
XR16M564/564D and XR16M654/654D have
automatic sleep mode, automatic hardware
and software flow control, a wireless infrared
encoder/decoder and a fractional baud-rate
generator. The Intel and Motorola bus
interfaces are supported.
The series is software- and pin-compatible
with the previous 3.3V/5V quad-channel
UART products. Each UART channel has a set
of registers that provides the user with
operating status and control, receiver-error
indications, and modem serial-interface
controls. An internal loopback capability
allows on-board diagnostics. Different FIFO
size options of 16-byte, 32-byte or 64-byte
are available.
