MCUs enshrine power-saving design from architecture to operating-modes
The MC9S08QE8 and MC9S08QE4
microcontrollers are new additions to the
Freescale Semiconductor QE family
designed for maximum energy efficiency,
featuring architectural enhancements to
reduce operating voltage as well as
current and thereby extend battery life in
portable or handheld products.
The MC9S08QE8 has a wide supply-voltage range
from 1.8V to 3.6V, and also features a 20MHz CPU
core, two 16-bit timers, and UART, SPI and I2C
interfaces. There are also two analogue
comparators, a 10-channel 12-bit ADC, an on-chip
temperature sensor and an internal oscillator.
The MC9S08QE8 offers low-power features such
as two stop modes, run and wait modes, 6µs
wake-up time from Stop3 mode, an ultra-lowpower
external oscillator, and clock-gating
registers to disable clocks to unused peripherals.
The flexibility to turn peripheral clocks on and
off individually allows designers to achieve high
performance with very low overall power
consumption.
The devices have 8-bit and 32-bit compatible
options. Commonality between pins, peripherals
and tools also aids the design process. The
wide range of small-footprint package options
comprising 16-pin TSSOP, 16-pin PDIP, 20-pin SOIC,
28-pin SOIC and 32-pin LQFP, provides many
choices for designers targeting space-constrained
portable applications.
The background debugging system and
on-chip In-Circuit Emulation (ICE) with real-time
bus-capture capability provide a single-wire
debugging and emulation interface that
eliminates the need for expensive emulation tools.
On-chip memory resources include up to 8 kbytes
of Flash memory, and up to 512 bytes of RAM. The
Flash memory is specified to 10,000 write/erase
cycles over temperature and 100,000 write/erase
cycles (typical) at 25°C.
