PowerQUICC™ enhancements deliver cost-effective enhanced storage
The MPC8315E is the newest member
of the Freescale Semiconductor
PowerQUICC II Pro family. The MPC8315E
communications processor integrates an
array of technologies essential for storage
markets, including SATA, PCI Express, USB
2.0, and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, XOR
acceleration and high-performance
security functionality.
The MPC8315E is suited to consumer Small-
Office/Home-Office (SOHO) storage and media-server
markets. The integrated dual SATA
controller supports both 1.5Gbit/s SATA and
3.0Gbit/s SATA 2.0 drives. RAID 0 striping and
RAID 1 mirrored storage are both supported,
with acceleration from the integrated XOR
engine.
The MPC8315E processors are available in
266MHz, 333MHz and 400MHz speeds, and
include 16kbyte instruction and 16kbyte data
caches. Lower cost variants are the MPC8314E,
which does not include the SATA interface, and
the MPC8315 and MPC8314, which do not
include the security engine.
All variants include hardware support for
IEEE 1588 clock synchronisation in industrial
applications.
The MPC8315E and MPC8314E are
Freescale’s lowest cost processors to include
integrated PCI Express. All variants include
dual single-lane PCI Express 1.0a interfaces
each operating at 250Mbytes/s bi-directional
speed. All Freescale’s PowerQUICC processors
are supported by third-party hardware and
software partners offering development
tools and systems, as well as middleware and
software stacks.
The built-in security engine in the
MPC8315E and MPC8314E is designed to offload
intensive security functions from the
main processor, such as key generation and
exchange, authentication and bulk
encryption. The engine is optimised for
algorithms associated with IPsec, IKE,
SSL/TLS, IEEE 802.11i, 802.16 WIMAX and the
802.1AE Media Access Control Security
(MACSec) standards.
