Linear/rotary encoders cut configuration time
With fixed resolution and automatic
correction for gain and offset, the
AS5304 and AS5306 magnetic encoder
ICs from austriamicrosystems eliminate
user programming and save the host
controller from performing register
configuration.
Both devices combine Hall-sensor elements and
signal processing, and are suitable for linear or offaxis
rotary sensing. High sensitivity allows them to
detect magnetic fields as weak as 5mT. The devices
also have a high magnet-to-IC air-gap tolerance
yet are also highly immune to external magnetic
fields. Further benefits include single-track operation,
which allows the use of low-cost magnets.
The AS5304 has fixed resolution of 25µm, while
the AS5306 can detect movements as small as
15µm. When mounted off-axis under a multi-pole
magnetised ring, or directly under a linear multipole
magnet, the encoder produces an index
output and incremental A/B quadrature outputs
providing 40 pulses per magnet-pole period. With
a magnetic ring of 32 pole pairs, this equates to
5120 positions per revolution, or 12.3-bits
resolution, and supports maximum speed of
9375rpm. The AS5304 requires a magnet with
4mm pole-pair length, and the AS5306 requires
2.4mm pole-pair length.
