Connector Design Enables Faster LED Assembly

The hermaphroditic blade and receptacle connectors, from Tyco Electronics, are surface mounted to allow faster assembly of solid-state lighting modules.

Tyco Electronics’ connectors can be used on aluminium-clad PCBs to provide easy interconnectivity of LED-lighting systems, such as lighting controls and LED-light modules.

The low-profile, surface-mount connectors are available with two, four and six connections, allowing LED PCB strips to be joined with traditional post-and-receptacle headers.

Connections can be made by sliding the two boards together horizontally or vertically. The capability to slide the two boards together vertically makes the replacement of a board in the middle of lighting strip easier.

The new connectors feature a flexible mating engagement allowance of 2.5mm horizontally and 1.1mm vertically to accommodate variations in the mounting of the PCBs. It also permits right-angle mating of boards. The liquid-crystal polymer housings feature a low, space-saving profile of only 3.2mm.
