8-Bit MCUs Target Sensing Applications with Focussed Feature Set
The 8-bit MC9S08SE8 from Freescale
Semiconductor creates a new entry point
for MCU-based designs, starting at 4kbyte
Flash and offering features optimised for
sensing and measurement functions.
On-chip peripherals include two 16-bit timers,
which can each be configured for capture,
compare or PWMto support a variety of functions.
In addition, a Real-Time Interrupt (RTI) timer
supports versatile functionality, such as generating
periodic interrupts, waking the CPU from Stop
mode, or recording the time of day when
combined with an external quartz crystal. An onboard
analogue comparator and a full 10-channel,
10-bit ADC capable of simultaneous sampling
allow these devices to be used in numerous
sensing and measurement functions. The ADC
module also contains a temperature sensor.
External communications are handled through
a combination of a Serial Communications
Interface (SCI) module, an 8-channel Keyboard
Interrupt (KBI) module that can be used to
implement a simple keypad/keyboard system,
and up to 24 GPIOs. Enhancing flexibility, the
MC9S08SE family also has an Internal Clock
Source (ICS) supporting multiple clock sources
including the internal 32kHz oscillator or an
external oscillator.
