TVS diodes boost transient protection per PCB area
The PTVSxxxS1UR series of 400W Transient
Voltage Suppression (TVS) diodes from
NXP Semiconductors consume less than
half the PCB area of alternatives in the
industry-standard SMA package.
Using NXP’s FlatPower package technology
the diodes provide 64W/mm2 of surge
protection, which is more than double that
of a comparable SMA device. At the same time
their SOD123W outline matches the standard
SMA pad layout, thereby combining space
savings with the convenience of a drop-in
replacement. The package fits inside the board
area normally filled by an SMA device, and its
mounted height of 1mm is around 50% lower.
With low leakage current of 1nA the devices
serve applications requiring high energy
efficiency, especially battery-powered products.
The PTVSxxxS1UR TVS diodes are available
with reverse stand-off voltages ranging from
3.3V to 18V. Additional devices with stand-off
voltages up to 64V will be introduced during
this year. The devices are also qualified to AECQ100
allowing use in automotive and industrial
systems.
