Smaller and more powerful remote controls, with 3mm-diameter infrared emitterith 3mm-Diameter Infrared Emitter



 


The 3mm-diameter Vishay VSLB3940 940nm infrared emitter allows designers to miniaturise remote controls, communication devices and detectors while at the same time achieving higher performance.

The usual emitter size for portable products is 5mm. Using a smaller device normally reduces transmit distance and off-axis radiant intensity, making instruments difficult to use and less repeatable. By producing optical power of 40mW at 100mA, and on-axis radiant intensity of 65mW/sr, the VSLB3940 delivers around 8% higher output than other 5mm emitters, despite its 40% smaller form factor.

As a high-speed emitter with switching times of 15ns, the VSLB3940 can support data rates up to 30Mbit/s allowing use in wireless communication devices and industrial automation. Good spectral matching to silicon photo-detectors also eases integration with the target application. In addition, the low forward voltage of 1.35V at the 100mA nominal operating current eases driver design and aids energy efficiency.
