The device’s low power consumption means that it can run continuously in handheld devices to provide constant motion information without excessively draining the battery. In Low-power mode, at an output data rate of 13Hz, the LSM6DS3 typically draws just 0.56mA, 20% better than any competing device.
By incorporating an accelerometer and gyroscope into a single package, the LSM6DS3 enables designers to achieve a reduction in board footprint compared to circuits using discrete sensors. Its land grid-array package measures just 2.5mm x 3mm, with a height of 0.83mm.
The LSM6DS3 has a full-scale acceleration range of ±2/±4/±8/±16g, and an angular rate range of ±125/±245/±500/±1,000/±2,000 degrees/s.

The LSM6DS3 is compatible with the main Operating Systems (OSs) used in handheld devices, including the Android™ and Windows® OSs. It can efficiently run the sensor-related features specified in the Android OS, saving power and enabling faster reaction times. Featuring an 8kbytes FIFO for dynamic data batching, it supports implementations calling for real, virtual or batch sensors.
Like the other members of ST’s family of MEMS sensor modules, the LSM6DS3 draws on the mature manufacturing processes already used in the production of micro-machined accelerometers and gyroscopes. The modules’ IC interfaces use CMOS technology: this enables the design of a dedicated circuit which is trimmed to match the characteristics of the sensing element.
