NXP Semiconductors : JN5169 Wireless MCU runs ZigBee stack and applications on-chip

The JN5169 from NXP Semiconductors is a wireless MCU which includes a 32-bit RISC processor core, a 2.4GHz IEEE 802.15.4-compliant transceiver and a mix of analogue and digital peripherals. Supplied with a ZigBee® PRO protocol stack, it enables system designers to implement a radio, network protocol and application all in one chip.

The device is notable for its high-output 10dBm power amplifier. This provides for a very long operating range, and gives the host system a greater chance of maintaining connection with a node in conditions hostile to RF reception compared to a radio with a lower link budget. At the same time, the JN5169 has best-in-class receiver operating current of 13mA and a low-power Sleep mode, resulting in excellent battery life and allowing direct operation from a coin cell.

The 32-bit RISC core supports variable-width instructions for high coding efficiency, and offers a multi-stage instruction pipeline and low-power operation with programmable clock speeds.

The JN5169 includes a temperature dependent, crystal-pulling feature which allows the use of very low-cost crystals, specified at 85°C, even in a smart-lighting application rated for operation at up to 125°C.

The JN5169 includes 512kbytes of embedded Flash memory, 32kbytes of RAM and 4kbytes of EEPROM memory, providing for over-the-air upgrades without recourse to external memory.

The on-chip peripherals support a wide range of applications. They include I2C and serial peripheral interfaces which can operate as either master or slave, a six channel ADC with a battery monitor, and a temperature sensor. The JN5169’s architecture can support a large switch matrix of up to 100 elements, or a 40-key capacitive touch pad.
