Intersil – Point-of-load power modules provide output voltage as low as 0.6V


ISL8205M: excellent light-load efficiency

Intersil’s new ISL8205M is a complete single-channel step-down power-supply module which can provide up to 5A of continuous current. The new ISL8202M, with which the ISL8205M is pin- and function-compatible, supplies up to 3A of continuous current.

The modules consist of a controller, power inductor and MOSFETs, and require only a few external components, making them ideal for use in space-constrained and portable applications.

Operating from a single 2.6V to 5.5V input power rail, the ISL8205M and ISL8202M provide an adjustable output voltage as low as 0.6V, with better than 1.6% accuracy over all line and load conditions.

The modules implement a current mode PWM control scheme which produces a fast response to transient voltages and excellent loop stability. They also implement a selectable pulse-frequency modulation mode to improve light-load efficiency, and a 100% duty-cycle low dropout-regulator mode to extend battery life.

The modules’ operating frequency is selectable through an external resistor in a range from 680kHz to 3.5MHz, or it may be synchronised with an external clock signal with a frequency up to 3.5MHz. A programmable soft-start reduces the in-rush current from the input supply, while an automatic output discharge function ensures a soft-stop.
