Hirose – Hybrid FPC-to-board connectors for USB3.1 connectivity

Hirose has introduced the BM24 series of connectors for space-constrained applications that need to support high-speed signal transmission up to 10Gbits/s via a standard USB3.1 second-generation port.

The BM24 range consists of a header and receptacles to provide a connection between a Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) and a circuit board. Featuring a parallel stack which is only 0.8mm high when mated, the BM24 series may be accommodated in even the thinnest of consumer-product designs.

The connector has a hybrid design which includes signal contacts rated at 0.25A and power contacts rated at 5A. This means that users do not have to integrate separate power and signal connectors into their design, saving costs and board space.

The pin assignment and the impedance characteristic of 85Ω ±9Ω are both compatible with the USB3.1 Type-C second-generation standard.

The BM24 offers highly reliable mechanical connection, due to the provision of unique two-point contacts and a long effective mating length of 0.2mm for the power contact, and 0.23mm for the signal contact. Guide ribs are incorporated into the housing body, providing for a wide self-alignment range of 0.3mm in the x, y direction, and permitting smoother mating operation. In addition, a tactile click is generated on mating.
