STMicroelectronics – Absolute pressure sensor includes built-in temperature compensation


The LPS22HB from STMicroelectronics is a piezo-resistive absolute pressure sensor which functions as a barometer with a digital output, measuring pressure at 24-bit resolution in a range between 260hPa and 1,260hPa.

Featuring a built-in 16-bit temperature sensor, the device implements temperature compensation automatically, maintaining its highest accuracy of ±0.1hPa over a temperature range extending from 0°C to 65°C. The sensor’s full operating temperature range is -40°C to 85°C. Its pressure output data rate is user-configurable to any of 1Hz, 10Hz, 25Hz, 50Hz or 75Hz.

The compact device comprises a MEMS sensing element and an IC interface which communicates through an I2C or serial peripheral interface from the sensing element to the application. The sensing element, which detects absolute pressure, consists of a suspended membrane manufactured using a dedicated process developed by ST.

The LPS22HB’s land-grid array package, which has a hole to allow external pressure to reach the sensing element, measures 2.0mm x 2.0mm x 0.8mm.

The STEVAL-MET001V1 is an adapter board for the LPS22HB product family which can be plugged into a standard DIL24 socket. The adapter board is supported by the STEVAL-MKI109V2 motherboard, which includes a high-performance 32-bit microcontroller functioning as a bridge between the sensor and a PC.
