Vishay Intertechnology has released a new integrated Ultraviolet (UV) light sensor for the measurement of UVA and UVB light intensity.
Featuring Filtron technology for high UV sensitivity and linearity, the Vishay VEML6075 incorporates a photodiode and signal-processing IC in a compact 2.0mm x 1.25mm x 1.0mm 2 surface-mount package. It provides an I C bus interface to a host microcontroller.
The sensor may be used to calculate a UV intensity value, to indicate how much UV radiation a person’s skin will be exposed to when outside. This is an attractive feature in wearable devices such as fitness and health-monitoring wristbands, as it allows the user to take precautions to avoid the risk of sunburn in the short term, and the potential long-term risk of skin cancer linked to prolonged exposure to sunlight.
The VEML6075 itself maintains excellent performance even after long exposure to solar UV radiation. It has separate channels for UVA and UVB detection. The peak sensitivity of the UVA channel is 365nm, and for the UVB channel it is 330nm.
