ON Semiconductor – Thermally-efficient compact IPM reduces size of motors using up to 1.1kW


ON Semiconductor has introduced a family of 3A to 15A Compact Intelligent Power Modules (IPMs) supporting applications consuming between 200W and 1.1kW.

Supplied in a small DIP package measuring 29.6mm × 18.2mm × 3.4mm, the Compact IPM devices benefit from low thermal resistance. This enables the use of a relatively small heat-sink and allows the designer to reduce the size and cost of the system and to increase power density.

The modules implement a fully integrated inverter power stage, and consist of a high- voltage driver, six IGBTs and a thermistor. The IGBTs are configured as a three-phase bridge suitable for driving permanent-magnet synchronous motors, brushless DC motors and AC asynchronous motors. Separate emitter connections at the lower legs provide flexibility in the choice of control algorithm.

The modules include an over-current protection circuit.

An internal comparator and reference connected to this circuit allow the designer to set the over-current protection threshold.
