Panasonic – Improved infra-red array sensor provides higher accuracy and longer detection range

Panasonic Automotive & Industrial Systems Europe has released an improved and more accurate second generation of its Grid-EYE Infra-Red (IR) array sensor.

Panasonic has introduced four new parts in its second generation Grid-EYE family: the AMG8833 and AMG8834 are high-gain types and the AMG8853 and AMG8854 are low- gain types. All four devices benefit from an improved noise equivalent temperature difference of 0.16°C at 10Hz and of 0.05°C at 1Hz, and a detection range up from 5m to 7m.

Fully compatible with the first-generation Grid-EYE sensors, the new parts may be dropped into existing designs to provide more accurate results in applications developed for the earlier parts.

Based on Panasonic’s MEMS technology, the new Grid-EYE IR array sensors combine a more sensitive MEMS sensor chip connected to a digital ASIC via an I2C interface, and a silicon lens, all in a single package measuring 11.6mm x 8mm x 4.3mm.

The parts feature 64 thermopile elements in an 8×8 grid format which detect absolute surface temperature without contact. Unlike conventional sensors, Grid-EYE uses a patented silicon lens etched out of a silicon wafer, and providing a 60° field of view. At just 0.3mm high, this lens is the smallest on the market.

Because the Grid-EYE sensor captures a high-resolution 64-pixel thermal image, it much more effectively detects moving and motionless people and objects than conventional single- element thermopile sensors and pyroelectric sensors.
