STMicroelectronics – Miniature new time-of-flight sensor offers higher range and speed

STMicroelectronics has released its second-generation laser-ranging sensor based on its highly successful FlightSenseTM time-of-flight technology.

The new VL53L0X sensor integrates a Single Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPAD) array and a Class 1 laser emitter, the light from which is invisible to the human eye. It provides higher immunity to ambient light and optical cross-talk, and this has enabled ST to extend the device’s measurement range.

The VL53L0X can take range measurements in less than 30ms over a range of up to 2m. The measurements are accurate to within ±3% regardless of the target reflectance.
