STMicroelectronics – New MCU with ARM Cortex-M4 core offers extra power-saving features


STMicroelectronics’ STM32F412 is one of the STM32F4 Access lines, the entry-level microcontrollers for cost- conscious applications requiring performance, energy efficiency, integration and connectivity.

The STM32F412 series features the ARM® Cortex®-M4F core and an Adaptive Real Time ART AcceleratorTM, giving performance of 125DMIPS and 1.25DMIPS/MHz according to the Dhrystone 2.1 benchmark. Power-saving STM32 Dynamic EfficiencyTM technology and voltage scaling help to bring power in normal operation down to 112μA/MHz with peripherals off. When normal operation is suspended, the Stop mode current is just 18μA.

Despite the small size of the STM32F412, it features a strong peripheral set, including up to 12 16-bit timers, two 32-bit/100MHz timers, a 16-channel DMA controller and up to 114 I/Os. Communication ports include SPI, I2C, I2S, USART, Full-Speed USB and two CAN 2.0B interfaces.

Its 12-bit ADC features up to 16 channels and operates at 2.4Msamples/s.

Designers of sensing applications on a tight power budget can take advantage of the STM32F412’s support for batch acquisition mode, one of ST’s Dynamic Efficiency innovations, which enables efficient use of the microcontroller’s power-management modes by capturing sensor data directly into SRAM while the core and Flash remain off.

The STM32F412 is available in four package styles, including a 64-bump 3.6mm x 3.7mm chip-scale package. It is supplied with either 512kbytes or 1Mbyte of Flash memory.

Security features include a 96-bit unique ID and a true random number generator.


This Discovery kit features an STM32F412 MCU and a 1.54”, 240px x 240px colour LCD with touchscreen, LEDs, wake-up button, I2S audio codec, MEMS microphones and a MicroSDTM card connector.
