STMicroelectronics – Ultra low-power MCU combines class-leading performance and efficiency


STMicroelectronics’ new STM32L496, the latest member of the STM32L4TM family of ultra low-power microcontrollers, features enlarged memory capacity, enhanced graphics support and extra peripherals.

Like the other members of the STM32L4TM family, the new device combines the strong processing capability of the ARM® Cortex®-M4F core with ST’s proprietary ultra-low power technologies for an outstanding combination of performance and efficiency. Its CoreMark® score of 273 is better than that of other MCUs with an ultra-low power core, while the ULPBenchTM score of 217 is evidence of its superior energy efficiency. Drawing active-mode current of just 37μA/MHz, the STM32L496 enables users to achieve longer run-time on small batteries, and extends the designer’s scope to create energy-neutral products powered by ambient sources.

The ST32L496 also offers a larger on-chip RAM of up to 320kbytes, which complements the newly added ST Chrom-ART AcceleratorTM graphics engine, giving smoother display performance in energy- conscious applications.

The new MCU offers up to 1Mbyte of Flash, an extra CAN interface, a camera interface and a crystal-less Full-Speed USB OTG interface.

A new 169-ball BGA package option gives extra flexibility to the system designer to take advantage of these new peripherals.

Like other members of the the STM32L4 family, the STM32L496 features the FlexPowerControl architecture, which includes a shut-down mode for additional energy savings, alongside multiple independent core and peripheral supplies, and a separate battery power domain with charging circuitry.

The STM32L496 also supports the seven main STM32L4 low-power modes.

Alongside the STM32L496, ST has introduced to the SMT32L4 family the STM32L4A6, which has a hardware cryptographic acceleration engine supporting the SHA-256 and AES-128, -192 and -256 algorithms.
