ON Semiconductor – Direct AC LED driver IC saves space and cuts system cost


ON Semiconductor’s FL779xx family of LED driver ICs provides a cost- effective and integrated means to implement a ‘direct AC’ drive topology.

Direct AC driving enables lighting equipment manufacturers to create smaller and lower- cost LED lighting systems which are easier to accommodate in space-constrained applications such as downlights. The FL779xx products only require two external passive components.

Unlike the conventional switch-mode power supplies commonly used in LED drivers, the direct AC drivers from ON Semiconductor do not need magnetic components and electrolytic capacitors, enabling them to fit into tight spaces while offering a longer operating lifetime.

They can also be tuned for low flicker without compromising the system’s power factor or increasing total harmonic distortion.

To support higher loads than the maximum power rating of a single driver allows, multiple FL779xx devices may be connected in parallel.
