Vicor has announced an addition to its PI37xx family of Cool-Power® ZVS buck-boost regulators. With a maximum 140W power rating and providing an output current of up to 8A at up to 96% efficiency, the new PI3740 Cool-Power regulator supports a wide input-voltage range of 8V-60V DC and produces a regulated output voltage in the range 10V to 50V DC.
Benefiting from Vicor’s proprietary, high- frequency Zero-Voltage Switching (ZVS) technology, the PI3740 offers conversion efficiency of up to 96% together with exceptional power density and performance.
Its wide operating-voltage ranges enable users to reduce both the number of regulators in a design, and the number of power-supply designs that an OEM has to develop, make and maintain. For example, a power supply incorporating a PI3740 can be designed to operate from, or charge, both a 12V and a 24V battery source.
In addition, all Vicor PI37xx buck-boost converters feature seamless transitions between buck and boost modes, making them suitable for applications in which the regulator’s input voltage varies above and below the output voltage.
The PI3740 fully integrates its controller, power switches and support circuitry within a 10mm x 14mm x 2.5mm chip-style Land Grid Array (LGA) package which has excellent thermal characteristics. It requires only an external inductor, resistive divider and few capacitors to form a complete DC-DC switch- mode buck-boost regulator.
The PI37xx family is backed by an online suite of design, system-analysis and simulation tools as well as evaluation boards.
