Panasonic Automotive and Industrial Systems Europe has introduced the LF Electric Double-Layer Capacitor (EDLC) in a stacked-coin package style. It has the part number EECLF0H105. The LF capacitor, which features low resistance and leakage current, provides a rated lifetime of 6,000 hours – the longest of any comparable EDLC on the market and three times that of previous Panasonic coin-type EDLCs. The capacitor has a 5.5V nominal rating and capacitance of 1F. The Panasonic LF is a gold capacitor, a technology which can provide up to 1,000 times greater capacitance than aluminium electrolytic capacitors. In addition, it can be charged and discharged much faster than rechargeable batteries, and can tolerate more than 500,000 charge/discharge cycles. These attributes make the Panasonic LF EDLC ideal for applications such as the back-up power supply for a real-time clock in smart meters. The LF capacitor is housed in a compact radial housing less than 10mm high and 21.5mm in diameter. It is guaranteed to maintain stable capacitance and internal resistance over time and at low temperatures. By contrast, the performance of competing products tends to change markedly after the first three years of use.
