NXP – New NFC front-end offers extended transmission range

NXP Semiconductors’ new CLRC663 plus, an efficient and flexible NFC front- end IC, is ideal for applications which require both high performance and low power consumption.

The CLRC663 plus, which has the part number CLRC66303HN, is pin-compatible with other devices in the CLRC663 family, the MFRC630 and SLRC610. It offers a longer transmission range and wider supply-voltage and operating-temperature ranges than the CLRC663 devices. The CLRC663 plus also has an extended temperature range of -40°C to 105°C, making it suitable for industrial and automotive end-products.

It is backed by the NFC Cockpit and NFC Reader Library, software development tools that NXP provides exclusively to users of its NFC ICs.

The new NFC front-end includes various interfaces to enable operation with a broad range of microcontrollers. Interfaces provided in the CLRC663 plus include SPI, I2C and UART, as well as up to eight general-purpose I/Os.

It also supports the connection of a Secure Access Module (SAM). A dedicated I2C interface is implemented for a SAM connection.

The SAM can be used for secure key storage, and acts as a very high-performance cryptography co-processor. A dedicated SAM is available for connection to the CLRC663 plus.

The device is ready for implementations of the EMVCo 2.6 L1 contactless payments standard. It also offers full compliance with the following NFC standards:
• ISO/IEC 14443B
• JIS X 6319-4 (comparable with FeliCa1 scheme)
• ISO/IEC 15693 (ICODE® SLIX family, ICODE® DNA)
• ISO/IEC 18000-3 mode 3/EPC Class-1 HF (ICODE® ILT family)
• Peer-to-Peer Mode: ISO/IEC 18092 passive initiator

  • Freely programmable 6kbyte EEPROM
  • Hard power-down and stand-by modes for power saving
  • Includes NXP ISO/IEC14443-A and Innovatron ISO/IEC14443-B intellectual property licencing rights
  • Compatible with all NXP smart-card products

  • Access control
  • Contactless payments
  • Gaming equipment
  • Industrial equipment

The OM26630FDK is a flexible and easy to use development kit for the CLRC663 plus NFC front-end. It contains a CLEV6630B board fully supported by the NFC Cockpit and the NFC Reader Library with a larger antenna optimised for EMVCo payments applications, and a smaller antenna with matching components for access-control applications. It also includes NFC sample cards based on the NTAG216F, an NFC Forum type 2 tag, and on the MIFARE DESFire® EV2.
