CUI’s Power Group has added four new series to its family of non-isolated DC switching regulators. The VX78-500, VXO78-500, VX78-1000 and VXO78- 1000 series offer both economical pricing and a high level of performance, providing a direct alternative to the use of linear regulators.
These switching regulators are footprint- compatible with LM78xx and LM79xx regulators housed in a TO-220 package. Unlike linear regulators, they do not require a heat- sink. This makes them ideal for use in designs in which board space is at a premium and energy efficiency is an important parameter.
The encapsulated VX78 series and open- frame VXO78 series, which are suited to positive- or negative-output applications, both offer 500mA and 1A output-current options. Housed in a compact, three-pin SIP footprint, the encapsulated models measure 11.6mm x 7.6mm x 10.2mm. The open- frame models are smaller, at 10.0mm x 7.2mm x 11.0mm.
The 500mA regulators accept input voltages ranging between 4.75V and 36V DC, while the 1A parts are for use with input voltages from 6V to 36V DC. Nominal output voltages of 3.3V, 5V, 9V, 12V or 15V DC are available. The operating-temperature range for all models is -40°C to 71°C at full load, derating to 60% of full load at 85°C.
