AVX – New supercapacitors available in cylindrical cells and modules


AVX has introduced a new family of Electric Double-Layer Capacitor (EDLC) supercapacitors which combines low cost with high quality and stable production repeatability.

The development of the new supercaps drew on AVX’s long experience of manufacturing supercapacitors – it has been producing the BestCap® range since 1997.

The new EDLC single cells or series- connected modules from AVX offer excellent pulse-power handling characteristics, thanks to their high capacitance and very low Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR). Used alone or in conjunction with primary or secondary batteries, the supercaps enable system designers to achieve extended back up time and longer battery life.

Harvesting and storing the energy inside the supercapacitor instead of in a battery helps to extend the lifetime of the application. This is because an AVX supercap can support many more charge/discharge cycles than a battery; it also charges much more quickly.

In addition, applications powered by a small battery, such as smart meters, benefit from the low ESR of the AVX supercap, which extends battery life if used in a parallel configuration. This enables high-current loads to be supplied by the supercapacitor, relieving the stress on the battery.


The AVX supercaps are available in various case sizes with diameters from 6.3mm to 60mm, and case lengths from 12mm to 165mm. The cans are supplied with either radial, solder pin or cylindrical leads. As well as a wide range of standard EDLC parts, AVX also offers complete custom modules for high- voltage applications up to thousands of Volts.

All parts in the series are tested and qualified for life cycle, high- temperature load-life, temperature and humidity characteristics, and vibration resistance.
