STMicroelectronics – New IR laser sensor performs ranging measurements over distances up to 4m


STMicroelectronics has introduced the VL53L1X, a state-of-the-art, Time- of-Flight (ToF) laser-ranging sensor module which provides accurate ranging measurements at distances up to 4m.

Part of the ST FlightSenseTM product family, the VL53L1X is the fastest miniature ToF sensor on the market, operating at sampling frequencies up to 50Hz. Housed in a miniature LGA package measuring 4.9mm x 2.5mm x 1.6mm, the module integrates a 940nm invisible laser Class 1 emitter, an array of IR photodiode receivers and a lens, with a low-power microcontroller for running the sensor firmware.

It provides excellent ranging performance in a variety of ambient lighting conditions. Easy to implement in ranging equipment designs, it can be hidden behind a cover window in a wide choice of materials and colours.

Unlike conventional IR sensors, the VL53L1X uses ST’s latest generation ToF technology which enables absolute distance measurement whatever the target’s colour and reflectance.

The system designer can programme the size of the region-of-interest on the receiving array, which gives the ability to control the sensor’s field of view.

The new VL53L1X is pin-compatible with the earlier VL53L0X, which provides ranging measurements over distances up to 2m. This means that it is easy for system designers to gain added range and performance without changing their board layout.
