The new PAM8016 from Diodes Inc is a driver IC which has features optimised for driving the Linear Resonance Actuator (LRA) and Eccentric Rotating Mass (ERM) haptic elements that are commonly used to provide tactile feedback such as vibration alerts in portable devices.
The PAM8016 is notable for its low latency and high output current capable of driving haptic loads. The efficient, filterless output-drive configuration achieves efficiency of up to 90% when driving an 8Ω load.
Start-up time is just 4ms. The driver operates from a supply-voltage range of 2.8V to 5.5V, compatible with the typical supply rail of a battery-operated device. It supports differential, single-ended or PWM inputs for easy integration with a host microcontroller.
The PAM8016 requires no external output filter and few other components, and a driver circuit based on the device occupies a small PCB area. This results in lower system cost and a simpler circuit design.
